If you live in America you are aware of Yellowstone National Park - our nation's first national park. But, many people are not aware that the Park sits atop one of the world's largest volcanoes. It is so large, in fact, that you can't see it from the ground, it is really only visible from the air and from space; it is called a "caldera". This type of volcano has such massive and violent eruptions that it doesn't have the characteristic "cone" that most people think of when they visualize a volcano.
The Yellowstone Caldera Supervolcano erupts on such a masive scale that it literally blows itself apart, leaving a crater where it once existed. This has happened several times throughout Earth's history and occurs roughly every 640,000 years.
I was fortunate to work with Grizzly Creek Films and History to film a special titled "Secret Earth: Yellowtone Supervolcano" where we examined the interworkings of Yellowstone's volcano and made a model showing the potential scale if it erupts again. What can we conclude? If it blows up, it will affect the entire world...
